Pelvic Floor Rehab in Burlington

What is Pelvic Floor Rehabilitation?

Female patient leg stretchPelvic floor rehabilitation is a specialized therapy focused on strengthening the pelvic floor muscles. These muscles support the bladder, bowel and, in women, the uterus. This therapy is essential for individuals experiencing urinary incontinence, pelvic organ prolapse, or postpartum recovery.

At The Healing Path Chiropractic and Wellness Centre, we aim to help patients regain control, strength, and stability in their pelvic floor muscles, helping improve their quality of life.

Who Can Benefit from This Therapy?

Pelvic floor rehabilitation is beneficial for both men and women. Women often seek this therapy after delivery or when dealing with stress or urge incontinence. Men may benefit from this care after prostate surgery or if they experience pelvic muscle weakness. Symptoms indicating the need for pelvic floor therapy include urinary dribbling, a feeling of something protruding in the groin area, and chronic lower back pain.

A Comprehensive Assessment and Care Plan

Our resident physiotherapist, Minakshi Fernandes, starts with a thorough assessment to understand the patient’s history and current symptoms. External and internal examinations, such as inter-vaginal or intra-rectal assessments, are included to evaluate muscle strength and identify areas of pain or scarring. She then uses these insights to create a personalized care plan.

A Variety of Therapeutic Techniques

Our approach to care incorporates various techniques to address pain and muscle weakness. That may include manual muscle training, electrical stimulation for very weak muscles, and specific exercises to strengthen the core and pelvic floor muscles.

While we primarily use methods such as NMR (Neuromuscular Reeducation) techniques, we do not typically employ laser therapy due to the internal nature of pelvic pain.

Custom Tailored Exercise Programs for You

Patients are taught specific pelvic floor exercises to continue at home to promote sustained improvement. Regular follow-up sessions are crucial for monitoring progress and adjusting the individual’s plan as needed. Each patient’s journey is unique, and our approach is flexible to meet their needs effectively.
