Adolescent Idiopathic Scoliosis Care in Burlington
Scoliosis is considered an abnormal sideways curvature of the spine and begins as a postural distortion. If this curvature is left untreated, it could become a permanent deformity.
What to Look For
You may notice your child has a high shoulder or low hip that makes clothing fit poorly. Uneven shoe wear may also provide a clue. Children with an abnormal curvature of the spine may also experience back and leg pains, though these are usually dismissed as “growing pains.”
How Chiropractic May Help
Chiropractic adjustments may help improve the spine’s structure and function. Because an adjustment may also help strengthen and retrain muscles, your child’s posture may improve.
The team at The Healing Path Chiropractic and Wellness Centre also utilizes ScoliBrace® for its patients, of all ages. Each brace is custom designed and made for the patient using the latest 3D scanning technology and computer-aided design and manufacture (CAD/CAM). Using a specific design algorithm, and a patient-centred approach to bracing, this ensures patients receive the world’s best possible 3D custom-made brace for their individual curve.
The over-corrective approach harnesses spinal coupling, not 3-point pressure, to better position the three-dimensional posture of the body. In this position, the brace then works to retrain the neurological connection between the brain, joints, and muscles to control the body posture, helping the body adapt to its “new normal” — ideally a straighter spine.
What to Expect
After the patient or their guardian fills out paperwork in advance of the first appointment, the doctor will review it to better understand what the patient is experiencing, their lifestyle, and their health history. They will then receive standard physical, orthopedic, neurological, and chiropractic tests to determine the root cause(s) of the problem.
If further diagnostic imaging is necessary, the doctor or a member of his team will let the patient know. Additional views may be taken to visualize the location of any spinal problems, reveal any pathology, and make the chiropractic care more precise.
The Report of Findings
During the second visit, the doctor will give a report of findings, as well as his recommendations for care. This will include a diagnosis, how his team plans to fix the problem, when results should be expected, and how much it will cost. If the patient decides to proceed, you’ll receive the care plan and schedule the next visits.
